The front page headline of The Sporting News announces that the Dodgers will play 20 games in Japan in the fall. The article states, “Arrangements were completed September 9 for the Dodgers to make the tour under the sponsorship of the Yomiuri newspapers of Japan and with the blessing of President Eisenhower and the good wishes of the State Department. Sotaro (Suki) Suzuki, the personable representative of the Yomiuri newspapers, who has a host of friends in baseball press boxes all over the world, announced the details of the barnstorming trip jointly with President Walter O’Malley of the Dodgers.” The Sporting News was for decades known as “The Bible of Baseball” for its extensive coverage of the sport.
