Official Program from the 1956 Dodgers Goodwill Tour to Japan
1956
The official program from the 1956 Dodgers Goodwill Tour to Japan features pitcher Don Newcombe on the cover with the Dodgers script logo in red, not its familiar blue. At 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, “Big Newk,” as he was known, had a 27-7 record for the Dodgers during their 1956 National League Championship season, when he was named NL MVP and Cy Young Award winner. In 1955, he won 20 games. He followed Jackie Robinson and Roy Campanella as an early African American pioneer in the majors. He and Justin Verlander are the only two MLB players to win three major awards – Rookie of the Year (1949), Cy Young Award and League MVP.
