1961 Telegram of good wishes from Walter O’Malley to Matsutaro Shoriki
1961
Dodger President Walter O’Malley sends a telegram with good wishes to Tokyo Yomiuri Giants founder and owner Matsutaro Shoriki on April 7, 1961. The Giants team had completed its two-week stay of pre-season training as guests of O’Malley at Dodgertown – Vero Beach, Florida. The Giants’ visit was historic, as it was the first time a team from Japan at the highest level had worked out with an American major league team. Dodger instructors spent time working on fundamentals and preparation for the season.
O’Malley’s note was prophetic as he writes, “It is my hope that your Giants and our Dodgers will both emerge victorious at the conclusion of our seasons.” The Giants won the 1961 Japan Series.
