This Day in Walter O’Malley History:
-
The Dodgers announce the signing of left-hand pitcher Sandy Koufax, an 18-year-old bonus baby for $20,000, in Brooklyn, his hometown. Koufax, who was on a basketball scholarship at the University of Cincinnati in 1953, was invited to play baseball and became a pitching star for the Bearcats. After his freshman season, he was sought by every major league team. As a freshman, Koufax was 3-1 with the UC varsity, striking out 51 batters in 32 innings.

Kay and Walter O’Malley move into their home in Los Angeles. For the first nine years in Los Angeles, they resided in their north shore Alpine-like chalet at picturesque Lake Arrowhead and would stay for short periods at the Statler Hilton in downtown Los Angeles.
