A blend of youth, new faces and veterans comprised the Dodgers of 1971, a talented group that fought the San Francisco Giants down to the last day of the season before falling short by one game. Manager Alston had to work miracles to keep the Dodgers in the hunt, as on May 26, they fell 11 games behind the tough Giants. Vice President, Player Personnel and Scouting Al Campanis had made several acquisitions prior to the 1971 season, as he traded for left-handed pitcher Al Downing, slugger Dick Allen and catcher Duke Sims. Young players Bobby Valentine, Steve Garvey, Bill Buckner, Joe Ferguson, Doyle Alexander, Willie Crawford and Bill Russell all added to an impressive mix. Veterans Maury Wills, Claude Osteen, Manny Mota, Willie Davis, Tom Haller, Jim Lefebvre, Bill Singer and Jim Brewer were all integral parts of the season. Downing pitched his way to the Comeback Player of the Year Award by The Sporting News, while Allen collected a team-leading 23 home runs and 90 RBI. Davis, “the 3-Dog,” had a .309 batting average to pace the club and earned the first of three consecutive Gold Glove Awards. The Dodgers kept closing in on their rivals from the north, as they were within 3 1/2 games back in August. After sweeping the San Diego Padres and Giants on the road, the Dodgers moved to within one game of the S.F. lead in September. Four straight losses at home hurt the club’s chances, but the Dodgers battled tooth and nail to the final day and went home one game back.
