Where would baseball be today if it didn’t move west? O’Malley not only opened up the West for baseball, he opened it up for all sports. Ebbets Field was rotting away. The girders were rusting. The place was about to be condemned. I believe O’Malley had tried for years to find a suitable place in Brooklyn for a new ballpark. He suddenly realized he was trapped.
