In looking to the development of Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Walter O’Malley writes to Dodger Director Bud Holman about housing the entire Dodger team, the press and executives in the “hospital building for 1954. This is important as I want to play more important games at Vero Beach than we are able to do in this first experimental year. You can tell Merrill Barber, the chairman of the dedication committee, and your friends, that we have already booked the Yankees and the Cardinals to play at Vero Beach next year. It is beginning to look like our operation in Vero Beach will take on the proportions that you and I have planned. The future depends on the acceptance of Holman Stadium, the ticket sale and the acquisition of the hospital building, which we would need to have the Dodgers spend the bulk of their time in Vero Beach.”
