At the Board of Directors Meeting with Branch Rickey, John L. Smith and Walter O’Malley in attendance at 215 Montague Street in Brooklyn, O’Malley presented a proposal of the U.S. Rubber Company to install “canvas covered (sponge) rubber pads for the outfield walls.” The proposed safety measure was unanimously approved at a cost not to exceed $5,000.
