October 9, 1959 headline in Los Angeles Examiner:
Sherry to the Rescue Again
CHAMPS!
Dodgers Win, 9-3
|

One season after finishing seventh in the National League, the Dodgers made a complete turnaround on the field to win their first World Championship in Los Angeles. The Dodgers defeated the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park, 9-3, in the sixth and deciding game of the World Series. It marked the second time in five seasons that the Dodgers had won baseball's ultimate crown. Dodger relief pitcher Larry Sherry was the Dodger hero in the final game and the Series, as he won two games and saved two others. Dodger President Walter O'Malley chose not to join in the celebration in the jubilant clubhouse, because neither of his key Vice Presidents Buzzie Bavasi nor Fresco Thompson witnessed the final game in Chicago, as illnesses kept them at home. O'Malley said, “As long as Buzzie and Fresco aren't here, I'll wait 'til later to congratulate the boys. Bavasi and Fresco built this team—I only wish they had been able to be on hand today.”
